Galunggong in Australia: Is Yellowtail Scad the Same?

Australian yellowtail scad should not automatically be called galunggong. Galunggong commonly refers to roundscads in the genus Decapterus. Australian yellowtail scad is Trachurus novaezelandiae. They can be considered for similar cooked meals, but the names do not establish an exact species match.
For shoppers recreating a Filipino breakfast or a fried-fish dinner, the most useful question is often about size and preparation as well as species.
Where the names differ
The Philippine National Fisheries Research and Development Institute describes galunggong as Decapterus species in its roundscad review. NSW identifies yellowtail scad as Trachurus novaezelandiae in the ocean hauling fishery.
That is why we use the phrase “cooking alternative” rather than translating one label into the other.
How to compare a replacement
| What matters to your meal | Ask at the counter |
|---|---|
| A small whole fish on each plate | What size are today's scad? |
| Crisp skin with rice | Is it cleaned and ready for cooking? |
| Familiar bite and richness | How does this product compare with the fish I normally buy? |
| Easy eating for children | Can you suggest a cut with fewer bones to manage? |
Do not compare only the price per kilogram. A larger fish may need dividing, while a smaller one may be served whole. Bone handling also changes the experience of the meal.
A sensible first use
If your usual dish is fried whole fish with rice and a sharp condiment, try a modest amount of yellowtail scad before buying for a gathering. Keep your familiar side dishes and seasonings so that the change in fish is easier to assess.
Pat the surface dry before cooking, use a pan that fits the fish, and avoid crowding. Those choices help with browning regardless of which suitable species you choose. Follow a complete recipe for your chosen cut and cook it through.
If the exact taste of galunggong is the point of the dish, ask specifically for that fish. An alternative is an option, not a reason to relabel the product.

Is yellowtail scad the same as yellowtail kingfish? No. “Yellowtail” alone is not enough information. Read our kingfish naming guide and compare the full product names.
