About our crabs

A whole cooked crab is one of the great Australian seafood experiences. Tasman Star stocks Queensland Mud Crab, Blue Swimmer and Spanner crabs — all cooked on the day of harvest to preserve the sweet, succulent meat. Mud crabs bring rich, buttery claw meat ideal for Singapore chilli crab or Cantonese ginger-shallot; Blue Swimmer crabs are perfect for pasta, risotto and Asian curries; Spanner crabs offer delicate, shred-friendly meat for San Choy Bau or Thai salads. Every crab is cooked in seasoned sea water, chilled rapidly and shipped the same week to your Gold Coast door. Storage

Keep cooked crabs refrigerated at 0–4°C and eat within 48 hours of delivery. Crack the claws only when ready to serve to prevent the meat drying out.

Serving

Serve a whole cooked mud crab per 2 people as a shared main. Crack the claws with the back of a heavy knife; serve with warm crusty bread, lemon and a light mayonnaise.

Are your cooked crabs ready to eat?

Yes — fully cooked. Simply crack, pick and enjoy. We can also prepare halved or cleaned crabs on request.

What is the difference between mud crab and blue swimmer?

Mud crabs are larger with rich, buttery claw meat. Blue swimmers are lighter, sweeter and used where a more delicate flavour is wanted.

How much meat does a mud crab yield?

Roughly 30–35% of the live weight. A 1kg mud crab will yield around 300–350g of picked meat.

Can I order live crabs?

Yes — we stock live mud crabs in season. Order via phone for same-week dispatch, subject to availability.

How many mud crabs should I order for a dinner party of 6–8 people?

Allow half a 1kg mud crab per person as a shared main with rice and sides. For 6 guests plan 3 crabs (3kg total), for 8 guests plan 4–5 crabs (4–5kg total). Order 48 hours ahead — mud crabs are tank-limited and sell out fast for weekend bookings across Southport, Main Beach and Broadbeach Waters.

Is crab kid-friendly for family dinners?

Older kids (6+) usually love cracking and picking crab — it is part of the fun. For younger kids it can be fiddly and a choking risk with shell fragments. The workaround: pick the meat ahead and serve in soft white rolls with mayo and lettuce as crab rolls, which works brilliantly for Burleigh Heads and Palm Beach family lunches.

Do you deliver to the Gold Coast?

Yes — we deliver fresh seafood across the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers every Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Order before 2pm the day prior to delivery.

How is the seafood packed for delivery?

All orders are packed in insulated cooler bags with frozen gel packs. Chilled items travel at 0–4°C; frozen items arrive at –18°C or colder.

Can I pickup my order instead of delivery?

Yes. Choose pickup at checkout and collect from our Gold Coast facility during business hours.

Are your seafood products Australian?

Wherever possible, yes. Every product clearly labels its country of origin. We prioritise Australian-sourced seafood from Queensland, NSW and Tasmanian fisheries.
