How Long Do Cooked Prawns Last in the Fridge? An Expert Guide

Fresh prawns are one of Australia's most loved seafood staples — but they come with a short shelf life. Whether you've cooked a kilo of king prawns for a gathering or have leftovers from last night's dinner, knowing exactly how long they're safe to eat can save you from food waste (and a stomach ache).

The Short Answer

Cooked prawns last 3–4 days in the fridge when stored correctly in an airtight container at or below 4°C. For peak quality, eat within 2 days.

If you're not going to eat them within that window, freeze them instead — cooked prawns freeze well for up to 3 months.

The Full Storage Rules

Temperature matters most

Your fridge should run at 4°C or below. Anything warmer and bacteria multiply faster. The "danger zone" for food safety is 5°C–60°C — never leave cooked prawns sitting at room temperature for more than 2 hours (1 hour if it's a hot day above 32°C).

Container choice

An airtight container is non-negotiable. Prawns stored loosely on a plate will dry out and absorb fridge odours within a day. Line the container with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture — this extends freshness by keeping the prawns from sitting in liquid.

Where in the fridge

Store on the bottom shelf at the back — this is the coldest, most stable part of most fridges. Avoid the door, where temperatures fluctuate every time it opens.

Shell-on or peeled?

Leave shell-on prawns intact until you're ready to eat. The shell acts as a natural protective barrier and the prawns will stay fresher longer. Once peeled, use within 1–2 days.

Day-by-Day Guide

| Day | Quality | Safety | |-----|---------|--------| | Day 1 | Excellent | Safe | | Day 2 | Very good | Safe | | Day 3 | Good | Safe | | Day 4 | Acceptable | Safe if stored correctly | | Day 5+ | Deteriorating | Not recommended |

How to Tell if Cooked Prawns Have Gone Off

Trust your senses. Discard cooked prawns if you notice:

  • Smell: A strong ammonia, sour, or "off" odour. Fresh cooked prawns smell mildly of the ocean.
  • Texture: Slimy, sticky, or unusually soft flesh.
  • Colour: Grey, yellowing, or dull washed-out flesh. Properly cooked prawns are white-pink with orange accents.
  • Appearance: Excessive liquid pooling at the bottom of the container.

When in doubt, throw it out. Food poisoning from seafood is not worth the risk.

Freezing Cooked Prawns

If you won't eat them within 3–4 days, freeze them. Here's how to do it properly:

  1. Cool completely before freezing — never put warm prawns in the freezer
  2. Freeze in a single layer on a lined baking tray for 1–2 hours (this stops them clumping)
  3. Transfer to a zip-lock freezer bag, press out as much air as possible, label with the date
  4. Freeze for up to 3 months for best quality (safe beyond this but quality degrades)
  5. Thaw in the fridge overnight — never at room temperature or under hot water

Do not refreeze prawns that have already been thawed.

Buying Fresh Prawns: A Head Start on Shelf Life

Freshness at purchase directly determines how long your prawns will last. Prawns that were caught yesterday and stored at optimal temperature will last longer than those that sat in a display case for two days before you bought them.

At Tasman Star Seafood, we receive prawns directly from our fleet and trusted QLD suppliers — so you're starting with the freshest possible product. Our Labrador and Varsity Lakes stores are open 7 days, or you can order online for home delivery on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.

Summary

  • Cooked prawns: 3–4 days in the fridge (airtight container, ≤4°C)
  • Best quality: eat within 2 days
  • Frozen cooked prawns: up to 3 months
  • Signs of spoilage: smell, sliminess, grey/yellow colour
  • Never refreeze thawed cooked prawns
