How Long Do Cooked Prawns Last in the Fridge?

TL;DR — Cooked prawns last 2–3 days in the fridge in an airtight container at 4°C or below; eat within 2 days for peak quality, or freeze for up to 3 months.

The Direct Answer

Cooked prawns stored correctly — airtight container, bottom shelf, fridge at or below 4°C — are safe to eat for 3 days. Quality is best on day one and two. By day three, the texture begins to soften and the flavour flattens. Day four is the absolute limit and only if storage has been consistent. Day five is not worth the risk.

The difference between "freshly cooked" prawns and "bought pre-cooked chilled" prawns matters here. Pre-cooked chilled prawns from a supermarket or fish shop have already been cooked and held under refrigeration before you purchase them. Check the use-by date on the packaging and treat that as the real deadline — you are not starting the clock from zero.

How to Store Cooked Prawns Properly

Container: An airtight container is non-negotiable. Prawns left loose on a plate absorb fridge odours within hours and dry out quickly. Line the bottom of the container with a sheet of paper towel to absorb any liquid that weeps from the flesh — this stops the prawns sitting in a pool of moisture, which accelerates spoilage.

Location: Bottom shelf, towards the back of the fridge. This is consistently the coldest, most stable zone in most domestic fridges. The door and the top shelf are the warmest parts and experience the most temperature fluctuation every time the fridge opens.

Shell-on vs peeled: Leave cooked shell-on prawns intact until you are ready to eat them. The shell is a natural moisture barrier and the prawns will stay in better condition. Once peeled, consume within 1–2 days.

Temperature: Your fridge should hold at 4°C or below. The bacterial danger zone is 5–60°C. Cooked prawns should never sit at room temperature for more than 2 hours — or 1 hour on a Gold Coast summer day above 32°C.

How to Tell if They Have Gone Off

Trust your senses before anything else. Discard cooked prawns that show any of the following:

  • Smell: Any ammonia, sourness, or sharp "off" odour. Properly cooked prawns smell mildly of the sea — pleasant and clean.
  • Texture: Slimy or sticky surface, or flesh that feels unusually soft and wet.
  • Colour: Grey, yellowing, or dull washed-out flesh. Cooked prawns should be white-pink with orange or coral accents. Discolouration, especially yellowing around the head joint, means spoilage has begun.
  • Liquid: Excessive pooling at the bottom of the container is a sign of cell breakdown.

When in doubt, throw it out. Seafood food poisoning — typically from Vibrio bacteria — comes on fast and is not worth risking over a handful of leftover prawns.

Freezing Cooked Prawns

If you will not eat them within 2–3 days, freeze them. Cooked prawns freeze well for up to 3 months with minimal quality loss if you do it correctly.

  1. Cool completely at room temperature — never put warm prawns straight into the freezer
  2. Arrange in a single layer on a lined baking tray and freeze for 1–2 hours (this prevents them clumping into one solid mass)
  3. Transfer to a zip-lock freezer bag, press out all air, seal, and label with the date
  4. Freeze for up to 3 months for best quality
  5. Thaw in the fridge overnight before use — never at room temperature or in hot water

Do not refreeze prawns that have already been thawed. Once thawed cooked prawns have been reheated, they must be eaten immediately and cannot be refrigerated again.

Start With the Freshest Possible Prawns

Freshness at the point of purchase directly determines your storage window. Prawns that were caught yesterday and stored at optimal temperature have a longer shelf life than prawns that spent two days in a display case before you bought them. At Tasman Star Seafood, we receive prawns directly from our fleet and Queensland suppliers — delivered to our Labrador store (5–7 Olsen Ave) and Varsity Lakes store (20 Casua Dr) daily. You can also order online for Gold Coast home delivery.
